Anfora

The anfora (amphora in English) was first used by the ancient Greeks and later adopted by the Romans. The Greeks used them to store and transport wine, oil, olives, grain and fish, while the later Roman design we carry at Caterina Ltd. was used to store wine or water. Initially the anfora lacked a decorative quality and had a pointed base to allow standing it in the sand or soft ground; however, a ring base and a more artistic design were added for domestic purposes in the more lavish Roman homes. These beautiful ceramics may no longer be practical for holding wine or water, but they make exquisite sculptures for the modern home.
