Caterina Closing Her Doors

Posted by Catherine Adams on

Yes, we are closing the store. After 14 wonderful years, during which I have met many amazing artisans and customers, learning from you all, it is time to call it quits. We will miss the visits to the artisanal workshops, the halting conversations across different languages and cultures. We will miss the regulars, who have for years thanked us for being here, for offering an alternative. We will miss the many visitors who praised the beauty of our offerings, who informed us about how they used our products and how much they meant. It is from a customer that I learned the true story behind the phrase “blue plate special” and the composition of a crackle glaze.

We are grateful for the many patrons who told us they come to our store every time they are in town, who brought their out-of-town friends and family here whenever they were visiting, who told us there was no store as good as ours in New York or Denver, or other places where I am sure there are some very fine stores .And we are sorry we will not be here at the holidays this year for all of you who promised to come back to do your gift-shopping with us at that time.

I had a dream, that we were, for over a decade, able to realize: to bring to market, at affordable prices, artisanal European housewares not readily available elsewhere. Indeed, we were the exclusive U.S. outlet for Royal Tapisserie tapestry handbags from Paris, for exquisite German Driessen linens, and, for ten years, for the Chateau du Bois fine lavender body care products. We have enjoyed our relationships with Christopher Radko, with Ubaldo Grazia, with Gerardo Ribigini, with the Veschini family from Deruta, Italy. We have made fast friendships with our reps, like Diane Baker, Tina Gray, Joanne Wirt and Cynthia Baginski—friendships that we hope will last beyond Caterina Ltd. But like all good things, this dream could not last forever. So it is time to hang up our hat and pass the baton to someone with a dream of their own.Thank you for fourteen great years. Caterina thanks you, too.
